On our never ending quest to find great resources for our clients as they grow, I spent some time with Maverick Angels this week.
I attended two of their local chapter “Arena” meetings, and saw a total of 6 companies make their case for funding.
Maverick Angels is an angel network with a filtering and mentoring process that founder John Dilts calls their “ecosystem.”
It starts with a very active pre-screening of applicants, which involves a small army of people reviewing applications and performing due diligence. Then they require startups to go through the Maverick Angels Entrepreneurs Boot Camp program, which helps the business to refine its investor presentation.
All this work means that when the local Maverick Angels chapters have their monthly meetings, they are able to present 5 companies to the members (investors) in a very efficient manner.
Only the quality deals get through to this point, and their presentations are clear and concise.
The South Bay chapter meeting, in Palos Verdes, was hosted by Mike Grimshaw, chapter president. And in Santa Barbara, the local chapter president is Jerry Knotts. Both are seasoned business leaders and investors, and I thought the events were very well run.
If you are a startup seeking angel level funding, I recommend you take a look at Maverick Angels and think seriously about going through their Boot Camp process.
