I remember first learning about Jeff Pulver, and following his work to promote Internet telephony, back in ’94 or ’95. He’s kind of a legend in the VOIP world. Conferences, publications, etc. Lots of energy and foresight.

More recently, he’s running the 140 Characters Conference, which took place in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago, and is in London this week.

Along with Eric Greenspan, serial entrepreneur and CEO of Make it Work, Jeff is hosting a #140Conference Meetup in LA on December 14th. They describe the event as a “slimmed-down version of the 140 Conference.”

Mashable.com has a nice article about how small businesses can use web video to grow their business

There are 25 billion videos watched each month in the US alone. That’s billion, with a “B.” So it should be no surprise that web video offers an important opportunity for small businesses to connect with a wider audience. For small business owners, online video represents a chance to reach thousands or potentially millions of people using a relatively simple and inexpensive format. All it takes is a video camera and a little time, and your message could very quickly be spread to a large number of new customers.

I attended the MIT Enterprise Forum Central Coast chapter monthly event this week in Santa Barbara. The subject was “Marketing Through Social Media and Social Networks.”

Moderated by Jacques Habra of Noospheric, LLC, speakers included Lorrie Thomas of Web Marketing Therapy.

She spoke on the importance of developing a comprehensive social marketing strategy for your company, small or large. There are many tools (Facebook, Twitter, flickr, etc.) and she emphasized how a complete, effective online marketing strategy will include all these and more in a coordinated, integrated fashion.

The presentation was impressive, and I’d recommend all small businesses go check out her site, her blog, and see what her “Wild Web Women” team can do for you.

According to a new study, released by social media platform Wetpaint and digital consulting firm Altimeter Group found that companies with the highest levels of social media activity on average increased revenues by 18% in the last 12 months, while the least active saw sales drop 6% over that period.

The study was dealing with major brands: Dell, Starbucks, Microsoft, Google, etc. In this blog, we’ll be exploring how this extends to small businesses.
